EDITING

For the last two years, I served as editor of a digital publication. It was my responsibility to manage a steady stream of new and creative content. It was also my pleasure to work with some very talented writers.

SURFACE DEEP
INSIDE MICROSOFT

Story: Ross Ufberg
Cover Design: Brittany Metz

We got an opportunity to do a story about Microsoft at their campus in Redmond, Washington. I initially planned to write the article so I did a lot of the research, conceptualization, outlining, and pitching to Microsoft. But when we brought on a new writer to the team, I figured this would be a great first assignment.

Story: Rick Paulus
Photography: Cynthia Yang, Sylvia Elzafon,
Micah Weiss

Cover Design: Aaron Silverstein

We assigned this story about people who have careers but also pursue artistic passions to a freelancer who had already given us two solid features. He gravitated towards the origin of motivation and relished minute details, which perfectly suited the narrative style we sought. We found the people and provided a brief to clarify theme and structure, and he once again delivered an excellent draft.

RISE OF THE
MULTI ELEVATOR

Writer: Kyle Chayka
Cover Design: Aaron Silverstein

We liked the idea of covering topics that already garnered a lot of attention, as long as the story was executed in a unique way. We contracted a seasoned freelancer who turned in a solid draft that just felt a bit distant from the subject, as though it were aided more by Google than actual interviews. With time running out, we couldn’t risk waiting for another attempt, so we asked him to infuse a little sci-fi whimsy into the piece to bridge the very universal feeling of riding in an elevator with the “what if” of a grand innovation. His attempts at the concept never quite hit the bullseye, so this ended up being one of the more heavy handed approaches I took to editing a story.
